Restaurant Sódemar in Roses
For the last meal of our Costa Brava food extravaganza, we dined at Restaurant Sódemar in Roses. Roses is the Northern most village that is part of the Costa Brava family holiday destinations. Keep a look out for the “Family Tourism” logo displayed in the entrance of establishments. You know these locations have services that are especially designed with families in mind. It just makes traveling with kids a little easier!

Restaurant Sódemar is located at the water’s edge in the village of Roses. It’s the perfect location for dining with a view. If you have a boat, you can dock at the pier and enjoy a waterside meal.
We were treated to a superb meal and an excellent wine selection as we concluded our culinary journey. We learned all about the local food and libations and were were given a lesson on cooking paella as we watched the chef prepare our meal.
The kids made flan with the chef and had a blast. They each took turns adding ingredients and mixing the batter. K had such a good time that he asked for the recipe. He’s impatiently waiting for us to have time to make (and eat) the dessert at home.
After being seated at a large table, we sampled local vermouth from Garriguella. This was my first time trying vermouth from any place at all, much less from a local vintner. I can’t say it became my favorite beverage, but I’m glad I had the opportunity to sample it.
Our meal started off with fresh anchovies from Roses with tomato bread, homemade seafood croquettes, shrimp and prawns. You can see Lucy trying the anchovies on the tomato bread. She usually refuses to try this much maligned fish in any form, so we were all pretty impressed with her sense of fish fair play!.
To accompany our food, we had several wines from Empordà. My favorite was the white wine, but all three were delicious. Derrick has already made a note of the red, so he can look for the bottle on our next trip to Spain.
Absolutely amazing. It was a wonderful pairing!
Our lunch was the freshly prepared paella marinera. The sauce used in the paella is made on site – we saw it simmering in a large stock pot on the stove. Fantastic!
The rice was cooked to perfection and this was one of the most flavorful paella dishes we’d had in Spain.
Fresh bread with alioli was also available throughout our meal. Alioli is becoming our favorite spread.

The kids were intrigued by the window where they could look into the kitchen and see the chefs work their magic. It was a cool experience to watch our lunch being prepared. Every time we turned around, Lucy was standing on a chair watching the chefs work.
The owner, Mary, was on top of things! She realized that the kids were getting restless after finishing their main course. She came over to the table with a bag of old bread and told the kids to go to the dock and throw the bread in the water. You should have seen the kids faces light up with excitement as fish came from every direction. They were everywhere! They were even jumping out of the water.
We got the kids back to the table and once again they were excited – it was dessert time. The adults had local dessert tap de cadaques which is like an angel cake accompanied by Garnatxa Roja dessert wine. The kids ate the flan d’ ou they helped to prepare.
We ended the meal with homemade orange liquor. I took a sip and liked the flavor, but after all the wine, I knew it wouldn’t be advisable for me to drink the entire glass. I would have been sleeping on the bus!
Sódemar is famous for their quality fresh fish, seafood and paellas. It’s a restaurant you don’t want to miss when visiting Roses. You can choose to eat in the restaurant or try the same tasting experience that we enjoyed.

My family was invited as guests to experience the food, atmosphere and family-friendliness of the restaurant. All opinions are 100% my own and may differ from others.

It looks like you had a great treat there.
I love the interactivity for the kids. It must be a great way to get them onboard with some excitement when sometimes restaurants can turn into a bore for some kids.
I also like the idea of the open kitchen – quite a modern feature now which provides us customers with some reassurance on the quality and standards of the kitchen.
The food certainly looks delicious and I think you were very fortunate to be able to sample it. If I’m that way I’ll certainly look out for this place.
